WashingtonElectric bicycle classes, 2026 definition, and access
Washington defines three e-bike classes up to 750 watts, with 2026 amendments excluding devices capable of more than 20 mph under motor power alone and easily configured noncompliant devices. Class 1 and 2 path use is subject to local/state limits; Class 3 is limited to a highway or adjacent path or local authorization. Class 3 sidewalk riding is barred except specified route/authorization cases; Class 3 minimum age is 16. No statewide helmet mandate was verified.

King CountyE-bike access, speed, and conduct on County trails and park paths
Class 1 and 2 e-assist bicycles may use regional trails and paved pathways in County parks unless posted otherwise; Class 3 is prohibited on trails and pathways. A 15-mph default applies on regional and backcountry trails; riders must yield to pedestrians and equestrians and use caution and lights at dawn and dusk.

Class 1 and 2 e-bikes may operate wherever bicycles are allowed. Class 3 e-bikes are limited to roads and bike lanes, with sidewalk operation allowed only where no safe alternative exists. Ordinance 3129 was adopted December 1, 2025 and became effective December 31, 2025.
