IllinoisElectric bicycle classes, sidewalk restriction, and path access
Illinois defines three classes up to 750 watts. E-bikes generally have bicycle rights on roads and bike lanes; Class 1 and 2 may use paths unless locally prohibited. State law prohibits e-bike operation on sidewalks. Operators under 16 may not operate Class 3 except as passengers; Class 3 bikes need a speedometer. No class-specific statewide helmet rule was verified.

South ElginClass 3, sidewalk, and micromobility restrictions
The Code bars Class 3 e-bikes from public or private streets, sidewalks, parking lots, bike paths, and public parks, except for disability accommodation. The code also generally prohibits micromobility devices on sidewalks. The Code is current through 2026 S-68; legislative history records Ordinance 2024-54 passed November 4, 2024. Its local Class 3 text appears inconsistent with the standard class definition, so consult the source when classification affects a decision.
