Motorized bicycle definition and operating restrictions
The District does not use the standard three-class e-bike framework. Its motorized-bicycle definition requires operable pedals, wheels at least 16 inches in diameter, and a motor incapable of propelling the device faster than 20 mph on level ground. Bicycle duties otherwise apply, but motorized bicycles are barred from sidewalks and off-street bikepaths/bicycle routes; roadway portions designated for bicycles may be used. DC government guidance also describes a 750-watt/100-pound low-speed e-bike limit.
